There's a lot of tactics in gameplay itself. But there is nothing wrong in trying out the game without knowing anything about conventions. Learning the conventions is a serious investment of grey matter. When the dummy lays his cards, good players will know much more than the position of half of the cards. The complexity comes with the "conventions" which are systems of conveying important information yabout your hand to your partner during the bidding process. Contrast this to early rounds of Hearts where most cards are in the deck and don't see the light of day. The depth is owed to the fact that the distribution of hands is known to quite an extent (every active player knows where halt half the cards are). (The bidding and scoring system is a bit of a mouthful but not scary either.) The player of the team that won the bit who bid the suit first leads, the opposing player (the "dummy") reveals his hand and puts it on the table, the cards are actually played by his partner. Leading a colour, following sut, trumping and discarding are like in similar games.
